Worship at St. Barnabas

Reverent, biblical, and rooted in the classical Anglican tradition.

Why liturgical worship?

The pattern of prayer that has formed Christians for centuries

Anglican liturgy offers a form of worship rich in Scripture, centered on Christ, and grounded in reverence rather than novelty. Week by week, the same shape of prayer forms our minds and hearts in the truth of the Gospel, the same prayers that have carried the faithful for generations.

Holy Communion

At the Lord's Table, Christ meets His people. This is the central act of our worship, where the grace of the Gospel is proclaimed and received. All baptized Christians who love and trust the Lord are welcome to commune. Holy Communion from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer is celebrated in Bellville every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., here at St. Barnabas.

Prayer Book worship

Our worship follows the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, words shaped by Scripture and refined by the saints across the centuries, and the Scripture we read is the King James Version. To pray these prayers is to join a great company of the faithful who have prayed them before us. Evening Prayer from the same book is said on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m., and anyone may come.

Beauty & reverence

Worship is offered to the living God as it ought to be, with care, order, and beauty. Not for performance, but because the One we worship is worthy of our very best.

Questions about the liturgy

Why we worship this way

Why the formality, the vestments, the kneeling, the set prayers, the church calendar? Visitors ask good questions, and there are good answers. We have gathered them in one place.
