ACNA Theological Statement

As the Anglican Church in North America, we identify seven elements as characteristic of the Anglican Way and essential for membership:

  1. We affirm the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as “the inspired Word of God, containing all things necessary for salvation,” serving as the final authority for Christian faith and practice.

  2. We recognize Baptism and the Supper of the Lord as Sacraments ordained by Christ, to be administered using His instituted words and elements.

  3. We uphold the historic Episcopate as integral to apostolic faith and the fullness of Christ’s Body.

  4. We confess the historic faith of the undivided church as expressed in the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds.

  5. We affirm the teaching of the first four Councils and the Christological clarifications of the fifth, sixth, and seventh Councils insofar as they align with Holy Scripture.

  6. We receive the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and its Ordinal as standards for Anglican doctrine, discipline, and worship tradition.

  7. We receive the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion (1562) in their literal and grammatical sense as expressing fundamental principles of authentic Anglican belief.

The province commits to maintaining the doctrine, discipline, and worship of Christ and seeks full communion with Anglican bodies holding the Historic Faith.
